5 Reasons Why EPDM Is The Most Eco-Friendly Roof System

EPDM, (or ethylene propylene diene monomer, admittedly a bit of a tongue twister!), is fast becoming the number one roofing solution for flat roofs.
EPDM rubber roofs have five green advantages over traditional felt roofing systems.
1. BUILT TO LAST
Once laid, an EPDM roof has a life expectancy of around 50 years. In fact, some of the first EPDM roofs were installed over 65 years ago and are still going strong.
2. ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE RAINWATER
The water that drains off the roof will be non-toxic, pollutant free and therefore perfect for collecting in a water butt for use on your garden or even washing your car.
3. IDEAL FOR INSTALLATION OF SOLAR PANELS
Take your new roof to the next environmental level with the installation of solar panels. An EPDM roof is robust enough to take additional weight, unlike felt which is prone to tear from constant pressure.
4. INSULATION PROPERTIES
Around a quarter of building heat is lost through the roof, so insulating the outside is just as important as insulating the inside.
According to the EPDM Roofing Association, EPDM roofs are much denser and therefore help in reducing heat loss, thus saving money for the property owner and helping the planet with reducing emissions.
5. MADE FROM RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
Many manufacturers include recyclable materials such as recycled tyres in the rubber composite, making an EPDM roof more eco-friendly.
EPDM roofs also have a low impact on the environment, so it’s a great choice for those with an eco-conscience.
